I can really relate to everything she said. Graduating from a predominately white private school, I got similar comments such as “You’re an oreo”. The problem is when people “jokingly” say it or think they’re paying you a compliment – when they’re indirectly insulting you. My younger sister, who is in 9th grade, dealt with “joking” comments such as “You’re not really black,” as if she doesn’t count or she is not a member of her own race. It’s interesting how people who are not even “racialized” as black are quick to tell you what your identity is solely based on how you speak. Thanks for sharing!
