It’s not often that I’m out around campus after dark without someone at my side to converse with, so I decided to take a soundwalk after dusk.
Aside from the consistent chirping of the crickets, the campus at night sounds a lot less busy then during the day – for obvious reasons – however, plenty of people were still out and about. Even though their voices were the sound my ears gravitated to the easiest, I found it interesting to hear how their voices echoed differently based on the structures around them and the distance I was hearing them from.
Another interesting thing I noticed was how stark the difference was in the soundscapes as I moved through campus. From loud conversations, into the low hum of generators and the sprinklers scattered about, to near silence aside from the gravel crunching under my feet, and then to the sound of cars passing by along with the falls from Upper Lake. There were no two areas that sounded even remotely similar outside the crickets all over campus.
The whole walk was certainly a serene experience.
