I took a soundwalk around 2pm yesterday; I was really interested to see the sounds I would hear during the bustle of campus, but at a time where a lot of people had class. There was a lot of activity, but it wasn’t so much that I was overwhelmed. I was kind of surprised by the noise I made myself, and I was really interested in how other people perceived me and the noise that I was making. I was also really fascinated by the concept of being able to tell where you were by making sound and listening. I walked by the Rockies, Skinner, and past Abbey Chapel. I scuffed my feet on the different surfaces – the roadway and sidewalk, the brick of the garden, and the cement in front of the chapel, to see what kind of noises it made and how they differed from each other. I also clapped as I passed the buildings and was in open space to see how the sound echoed or changed. I gained a lot of perspective about how we make noise and how it reacts to the environment.
