What Moral Values Reflected in the Yue Operas
By Wenfei Jia
Yue Opera is a popular theatrical form performed by female actresses and mainly for female audience. As a female and modern audience, I think there are two moral values reflected in the Yue Opera that are still valid and important to today’s society.
First of all, women should always strive for their own right and equality. Since ancient times, Confucianism has played an essential role in the Chinese culture because the value of Confucianism. Confucianist states that women were only allowed to stay at home to take care of their family and they were not allowed to work in the market. However, the rise of Yue Opera had a huge impact in changing women’s status in China. This “all-female cast” opera raised is against and conflict about the value of Confucianism. For example, in the Yue Opera version of The Butterfly Lover, the character Yingtai is portrayed as a woman who chose her own decision for education, love, and marriage. It also depicted that women are as smart as men since Yingtai’s intellect demonstrated that women are equal in men in education and intelligence.
Second, I think independent of a woman is other value expressed by the Yue Opera. For example, at the first class we watched Two Actresses. Chunhua is a child bride but she refuses to surrender to this arranged marriage. So she made decision for herself so that she runs away from home and joins with a Yue opera troupe to learn a skill by this means she obtains her own life in her hand. In the opposite, Yuehong’s decision is to marry Tang in this way to have a better life without hardworking by herself. Even she knows he already has a wife and she is regarded as a servant. However, her decision makes her lost her freedom and dignity as a woman, but also suffers tons of pain. From this play, it shows us women should reply on themselves instead of count on men. Yue Opera has played an important role in women’s lives since it’s a way for them to express their emotions and a way for them to search for independence.
Unlike Beijing Opera or many other regional operas, Yue Opera not only supports the female audience to change and fight for their rights, but also significantly influence female moral values until nowadays.
