Yue Opera Version of The Peony Pavilion
By Colgan Powell
The Yue Opera version of “The Peony Pavilion” was the first adaptation that I have seen and I did not consider it “modern” in the sense of what I think most people consider modern. I thought the approach to be pretty classical and traditional, but over the length of this course, I have realized that classical and traditional components of Yue Opera are maintained with new productions because of the distinctions they represent of Yue Opera. Yue Opera would not be Yue Opera without these components. With that said, I did like the version and thought the adaptation was a job well-done. The version was crisp and clean, the scenes cut well and every detailed considered. So as a modern version, the “traditional or classical” components were maintained. The version is a modern take on a timeless opera, but with all the advantages of modern technology and resources. I think this is what makes the piece modern, the scale and details the adaptation was able to pull off. Because of the time the film was made, it is in color and seems very real. Not like a play being performed for film, but that the producers were thoughtful about the adaptation being meant for film and how that would come across. For me, it was a memorable take on a classic tale.
