After watching multiple Yue Opera performances, the one I have enjoyed the most was the first film we saw.\u00a0Two Actresses<\/i>\u00a0was a perfect way to set up the semester of learning about the style and history of Yue Opera. Viewing\u00a0Two Actresses<\/i>\u00a0gave insight to the life and social implications the productions give and allowed for us to see that it wasn\u2019t just about the plays in the end. The reason Yue Opera is popular today consists of its historical context and significance within developing women\u2019s participation in cultural traditions. While the plays are a all classical myths, stories, and legends they are performed in the now.\u00a0 modern playwright, even though working with older stories, should try and interoperate the works to fit today\u2019s values and reflect the history and importance of Yue Opera. Yup Opera began based off the attempt to break from stereotypical gender roles and spaces non-inclusive of women. Using old legends that still depict these gender roles Yue Opera has worked hard to break in real life does a disservice to continue to perpetuate these ideals through their creative productions. While it is not the responsibility of Yue Opera to solely create more roles and a variety of characters for women, it is a good outlet to start at. Creations like\u00a0The Butterfly Lovers<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Saving a Prostitute\u00a0<\/i>are beautiful, but can easily be applied in a modern day context.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
