In celebration of Barbara Smith class of 1969’s 50th anniversary reunion and conferring of her Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at the 2019 commencement, Archives and Special Collections curated an exhibition that uniquely shares Smith’s engagement and impact on our campus. Smith is an author, activist, and independent scholar. Her groundbreaking contributions have created a framework to articulate and understand the intersections of race, class, sexuality, and gender on a personal, social, and political level. Through direct action, intentional community building, and the written word in the student newspaper, Smith was an active leader on many social justice causes on and off campus.
Original exhibition curated by Micha Broadnax, Digital Projects Archivist with assistance from Miesha Moss ‘19; online adaptation by Lindsey Restelli ’22, and Tracey Kry ’04, Digital Collections Archivist.
