Prominently, as the cover and feature article, in the Spring 1969 edition of the Alumnae Quarterly, Smith along with Sheryl McCarthy ’69 and Sharyn Ainsworth ’69 spoke to their experiences and observations as Black students at Mount Holyoke to the alumnae community. During their student years, in part thanks to the recruiting efforts by Black students, Mount Holyoke had experienced an increase in Black student enrollment, along with the creation of a Black student organization, a Black Cultural Center, and courses that would constitute as Black Studies. And still, the three articulated opportunities for the college to improve.
