During Smith\u2019s senior year, she organized an informal group on campus. In recognition of the importance of community learning, the group centered their efforts on consciousness-raising activities such as shared article readings and sensitivity trainings. The group collaborated with the Student Government Association in their campaign for restructuring institutional decision-making to better include student voices. These efforts were formalized through a position paper, \u201cThe Case for Participation,\u201d which was written by Joan Libby \u201969, Allison Dye \u201969, and Gina Holmes \u201969. Smith\u2019s specific contribution included a referendum for student self-determination for creating and enforcing social regulations. Smith was entrusted to represent her peers in a discussion with Professor Marjorie Childers and Professor James Ellis about the campus climate and restructuring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
