For these early Black alumnae, there was very little community or support for being a minority on a predominantly white campus. Many from this time period mention a sense of isolation. The growing focus of the 1960s and 1970s was on creating Black community through increasing the admission of Black students, and creating social groups and physical spaces for connection and support.  This led to the creation of the first Afro-American Society, the precursor to several of the groups still active today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
