I really liked working with art and music as vessels to help create poetry. A lot of people said that they found art based poetry harder than music based poetry, but I honestly found the art based poetry much easier. I love finding stories within things and then twisting them into something new. With the music I feel like there’s too much free reign, which makes me revert to cliches that I hate falling into—especially with peaceful piano music like that.
It was really interesting to work with things that can inspire us, however, I also realized that I do not work that well with frameworks like these. For instance, when I see a painting and want to write about it I find it difficult to see anything but the colors in there or the obvious motif and thus I feel very limited in what I can write about. Although, I always listen to music while studying, writing, working, etc. I usually choose the tone and what kind of feeling I want to evoke and if it is chosen for me I feel a little lost. However, I did not think about this before and it was great to see what helps and what limits my writing.
My takeaway from the week is to let everyone know to read Professor Cassarino’s poetry. I attended her reading and read much of her book, and am so, so moved.
