History
Baern was established in 612 by a small group of dragons and humans from Morenth. Tensions between it and its neighbor, Bain’nard were high at first, Bain’nard being suspicious and scared of dragons. When, however they realized that there were humans that lived with the dragons, the people of Bain’nard no longer cared. In fact strong trading and political ties exists between the two nations by 637.
However Baern’s neighbors to the west and south, the human kingdom Otakai and the halfling settlements respectively, were not as happy. Otakai had laid claim to the southern reach of the Wernt Mountains where Baern declared itself a nation, even though they did not dwell in or use them at all, and the halflings did not want dragons, even peaceful dragons, as their neighbors. The halflings did not complain, simply moving out of the foothills of the mountains and farther south. Otakai grew angry at Baern and in 615 declared war on Baern. Baern attempted to negotiate peace but it fell through. By 617 two things were apparent, one, Baern was not going to resolve this peacefully and, two, the Otakai people were not experienced at fighting in mountainous terrain. Baern decided to wait the war out and, though this did lose Baern several settlements to the west, Otakai was forced, because of the terrain, to call an end to the war in 621. Baern and Otakai have remained at peace since, though individual interactions between the two nations citizens do still come to blows.
When in 768, the Galanese began to subjugate the halflings to the south of Baern, the nation chose not to intervene. Then in 770 a delegation from the most eastern halfling settlements arrived in Baern with a request for assistance. Baern formed an alliance and helped the halflings declare their own nation, Hearqiasha, in 773, effectively ending what has become known as the Gylanesian Invasion to humans and the Slavery Wars to the halflings. Because of Baern involvement in this, it holds a strong alliance with Hearqiasha and hostile relationship with Hapina, the colony turned nation.
In 823 a group of dwarves from Gloff came to Baern seeking a new home and Baern allowed them to stay, eventually making them official citizen of Baern in the year 934. Over the years Baern has become a central stronghold for the righteous.
When the Slavery War between Farshno and Hapina broke out in 1223, Baern joined the next year, siding with Farshno, in response to Mel joining Hapina. However, with Innarea marching on the Otakai Pass to the north, Baern now faces war on two fronts.
