Nokedoju

Nokedoju is the Spirit of the World’s Waters. He pays little attention to what goes on around him as the markers of time used by civilizations mean very little to him.

Appearance

He commonly appears as fisherman or merman.

He rarely communicates and only through subtle signs in the world.

Worship

He is given honor when worshippers crossed rivers, lakes, or ventured onto the ocean. As such, shrines are found by river crossings, set around lakes, or constructed on shorelines. Prayers to Nokedoju are conducted by pouring water or wine either into the water being ventured on or the shrine’s basin. Villages and roads built around large bodies of water always have at least one shrine to Nokedoju.

There is no given time of the year for which he is worshipped, being believed to exist beyond time itself.

History

Little is known about Nokedoju or his ciboje.
