First established to guard the border during times of unrest, it quickly grew to be a trade hub for <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/eastedinose\/bern\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"109\">Baern<\/a> as the pass it overlooked, the <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/eastedinose\/otakai-pass\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"611\">Otakai Pass<\/a>, is one of the safest and quickest routes from the <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/eastedinose\/the-western-lands\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"657\">Western Lands<\/a> to either the northern nations or the <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/eastedinose\/plains-valley\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"613\">Plains Valley<\/a>.
