The geodatabase <em>Worcester.gdb<\/em> contains the following themes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Worcester_City<\/em> \u2013 An outline of the city limits (used for display)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Worcester_Streets \u2013 <\/em>Importantstreets centerlines (used for display)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Worcester_Colleges<\/em>\u2013 Polygons of the campus of the different colleges<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Geocoded_Crimes <\/em>\u2013&nbsp; location of crimes in the city of Worcester for the 6 month time period of May-Nov 2014 (compiled from <em>crimereports.com<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preliminary Task &#8211; Catalog<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"202\" height=\"114\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/catalog-view.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-622\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Copy the corresponding dataset to your X:\\ drive and create a new ArcGIS Pro project in that data folder (X:\\ex6). Don\u2019t make a new folder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the ribbon go to the <strong>View tab<\/strong> and click the icon for <strong>Catalog View<\/strong>. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that a new tab with a new ribbon is added to the project as well as a new pane. Also notice that the CP looks different, similar to a \u201cfile explorer\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201c<strong>Catalog<\/strong>&#8221; is the tool that you must use to copy, move, rename, delete, etc. GIS layers, especially when dealing with GeoDBs.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"49\" height=\"65\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/Add.png\" alt=\"Add button\" class=\"wp-image-615\" style=\"width:61px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Catalog ribbon click the down arrow under the Add button in the Create group and choose Add Folder Connection<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Navigate to your X drive: under \u201cThis PC\u201d select the X drive on the right and choose OK<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the CP, while looking at the Catalog window, open Folders, navigate to your X drive, and explore the content of the folders inside.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go inside Ex6 folder and explore the content of the Worcester GDB: You should be able to click on the GDB on the left (CP) and in the middle window, you will see its content.&nbsp; It should have the layers described above.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right click on one of the layers and choose Add to Map. Verify that it is added to the map by going to the Map tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add the rest of the layers by Ctrl clicking them, then right click and Add to Map<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Task 1: Buffering<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to the Map window and make sure that all the layers are there.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Turn off <em>Worcester_Streets<\/em> and <em>Geocoded_Crimes<\/em> and leave on <em>Worcester_City<\/em> and the <em>Worcester_Colleges.<\/em> Arrange the layers so you can see the colleges about the city limits.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before we begin our analysis, we will label the college polygons to make our work easier to interpret.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Study the attribute table of the college theme and notice that there is a column with the names of the colleges.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right click on the College theme in the CP and choose Label.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It should be fine now, but if the wrong names are being shown: with the theme selected in the CP go to the \u201cLabeling\u201d tab in the ribbon. Here you can change the column with the right label in the Field box, type (font, size, and placement) of the label, label placement, etc. but let\u2019s just accept the default<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice that both Clark University and MCPHS (Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences), have two locations, so there are 11 polygons, but only 9 colleges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since we want to study the crimes that happen only around the colleges we could do a \u201cSelection by Location\u201d and extract the selected crimes. You know how to do this already, but we\u2019ll learn another way by first making <strong>buffers<\/strong> around the college campus, then we\u2019ll use these buffers to clip the crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/buffers.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"366\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/buffers.png\" alt=\"Buffers\" class=\"wp-image-628\" style=\"width:564px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/buffers.png 600w, https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/buffers-300x183.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"56\" height=\"68\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/tools.jpg\" alt=\"tools\" class=\"wp-image-631\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Look at the \u201cTools\u201d <strong>group<\/strong> in the Analysis tab of the ribbon.&nbsp; Find and click on <strong>Pairwise Buffer<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Geoprocessing Pane that opened, set <strong>Input Features<\/strong> <em>Worcester_Colleges<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specify the <strong>Output Feature Class<\/strong> as collegebuffer_dissolved.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enter the <strong>Distance <\/strong>as 0.25, and set the units to <strong>Statute Miles<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the <strong>Dissolve Type<\/strong> to \u201cDissolve all output features to a single feature&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Run <\/strong>(below).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resulting layer is added automatically to the CP, if not, you have to add it. Examine the result. Open the table of the college buffer. Does it look strange?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 1. How many objects (buffers) are present? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This result is a consequence of the \u201cDissolve all output\u201d we chose.&nbsp; With this option, <em>\u201call buffers are dissolved together into a single feature, removing any overlap\u201d<\/em> (ArcGIS Help). This polygon is called a \u201c<strong>Multipart<\/strong>\u201d polygon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In our case, we want one polygon for each college campus, so we are not going to \u201cDissolve\u201d the boundaries of the buffers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"7\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Redo the buffer operation. This time leave the default Dissolve Type to \u201cNo Dissolve\u201d.&nbsp; Save it as <em>collegebuffer_undissolved.<\/em> Study the result and compare it with the previous buffer theme.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 2. How many buffers are there now? ______. (Hint: always check in the table)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now each college polygon should have its own buffer.&nbsp; However, there is still a problem with the new buffer theme.&nbsp; There are two different buffer polygons for both Clark University and MCPHS, and we want to have just one buffer for those (i.e. one buffer region per college).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"8\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Redo the buffer operation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This time choose the Dissolve Type to \u201cDissolve features using the listed fields \u2026\u201d and right below there, select the \u201cName\u201d column as \u201cDissolve Field\u201d. With the LISTED Fields dissolve type \u201c<em>Any buffers <strong>sharing attribute<\/strong> values in the listed are dissolved\u201d<\/em> (ArcGIS Help).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background-color-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><em>NOTE: make sure you are making the buffers of the original college polygons.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Save it as <em>collegebuffer_final.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Study the result and compare it with the previous buffer themes.&nbsp; As you can see now there is only one polygon as buffer for both Clark U. and MCPHS.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background-color-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><em>HINT: you should end up with 9 buffers, which is the number of colleges in Worcester. If you didn\u2019t get this number, do it again as this is critical for the rest of the exercise.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"9\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This final buffer theme represents the areas you will consider in your analysis of crimes near Worcester colleges. Remove <em>collegebuffer_undisolved <\/em>and <em>collegebuffer_dissolved<\/em> from the CP to avoid confusion with the rest of the analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Task 2: Clipping and Summarizing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"10\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Turn on the <em>Geocoded_Crimes<\/em> theme (or add it to your map if not there) and study its attributes. Notice that there is a column called \u201cCrime_Type\u201d that we will use to summarize, at the end, and a column called Address with the location of the crime.&nbsp; In a later exercise, we will learn how to create a GIS layer using this address information by a process called Geocoding.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"388\" height=\"126\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/clipping.gif\" alt=\"Clipping process\" class=\"wp-image-616\" style=\"width:317px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let\u2019s extract the crimes inside the college buffers using the Geoprocessing function \u201cClip\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp; Clipping cuts features in one layer using the boundaries of polygon features from another layer.&nbsp; It\u2019s like using a cookie cutter on a mass of cookie dough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"11\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Analysis tab, under the Tools group click the <strong>PairwiseClip <\/strong>tool.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For<strong> Input Features<\/strong> choose <em>Geocoded_Crimes<\/em> (or drag and drop from the CP). This is the cookie dough.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose <em>collegebuffer_final <\/em>as the <strong>Clip Features<\/strong>. This is the cookie cutter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call the <strong>output <\/strong><em>Clipped_crimes<\/em> (make sure to NOT leave blank spaces in theme names, use underscores).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click Run. Wait for it to finish and study the result.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove <em>Geocoded_Crimes<\/em> to avoid confusion<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 3. How many crimes are there in Clipped_Crimes (after the clip)? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We now want to summarize the resulting table, but first, we want to add, to each crime, the name of the closest college.&nbsp; For this let\u2019s do a <strong>spatial<\/strong> join of <em>Clipped_Crimes<\/em> with <em>collegebuffer_final.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"12\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Right click on <em>Clipped_Crimes<\/em> and select Join and Relates and choose to do a <strong>spatial join<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Clipped_crimes<\/em> should be entered as Target Features.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose <em>collegebuffer_final<\/em> as the Join Features.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose to Keep All Features.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Match Option = Intersect<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click OK<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"13\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Verify that <em>Clipped_crimes<\/em> now contains a column with the name of the college around which the crimes happened.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summarize the column Name in <em>Clipped_crimes<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Right click on the Names column in the new layer and choose Summarize<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Input Table = <em>Clipped_crimes<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Output Table <em>Crimes_summary (or something appropriate)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Statistics Field = Name (this will have the name of the joined table)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Statistics Type = Count<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 4.&nbsp; Which college has the largest number of crimes around its campus? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 5. How many crimes happened near Clark University? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This result made the president of Clark University a little nervous, so let\u2019s prepare a report for Clark University summarizing the types of crimes that happened around the campus for this time period. You can do the following analysis with any college that you want to use; I\u2019m using Clark U. as an example, if you choose another college, just change the name accordingly in the following instructions and make sure to use the correct labels in the reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"15\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On <em>Clipped_crimes<\/em> theme select the ones that happened around Clark University (you should know how to do this AND you should get the same number of items selected as question 5, above).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Summarize the column Crime_Type for Count (Notice that the summary will be done ONLY in the selected items)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Save it as <em>Clark_Summary<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"17\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <em>Clark_Summary<\/em> table and study it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 6. What is the most common crime around Clark University? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s plot the results as a bar chart (you could use other types, but now let\u2019s use a bar chart).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"18\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With the <em>Clark_Summary<\/em> table open, click on Standalone Table in the ribbon and&nbsp;click on Visualize\\Create Chart button to the right and Choose Bar chart<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Chart Properties pane that opens<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Choose Category = Crime_Type<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Numeric Field(s): add Frequency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data Labels: Tick the Label bars box<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the <strong>Sort <\/strong>field choose <strong>Y-axis Descending<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On top of the Chart pane go to General and enter a Chart Title: e.g. \u201cCrimes around Clark University, May-Nov 2014\u201d (or whatever college you chose)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In General also fix the X axis title to remove the underscore \u201c_\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On top of the Chart pane go to Axes and increase the Label character limit to 30<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experiment with some of the options in Chart Properties to make a nice chart.&nbsp; Brownie points to whomever can figure out how to change the bars\u2019 colors and\/or find a better placement for the labels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"20\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create the best layout (Insert tab) that you can make showing city limits and a background layer, streets, <em>clipped_crimes<\/em>, college polygons (NOT the buffers) with labels. Make sure the full city of Worcester is visible.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insert the bar chart you just made: In the Insert tab, AFTER you insert the Map frame in the upper part of the page, enter a Chart Frame (Map Surrounds group) in the lower part (Hint: click the down arrow in the Chart Frame and select the chart you just made).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add all the required ancillary objects (including your name, date, data source, legend, north arrow, scale bar, etc.). For this map DON\u2019T INCLUDE the Grid, since we know where it is.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be conscious of the aesthetics of the layout. Make me proud!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 7.&nbsp; Upload your map to Moodle in PDF format as Ex6_yourname_part1.pdf<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 8.&nbsp; Create a cartographic model of the procedures you just did. Add a title and your name, and save it as PDF or graphic format (make sure I can read it). Save as Ex6_yourname_cartoModel1.pdf. The optimum place for this building complex must meet the following criteria:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><em>Surface water<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 site must be located at least 500 feet away from lakes, streams, swamps and above the Connecticut River\u2019s 100-yr flood zone.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Land-use<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 consider the use of \u201cundeveloped land\u201d (crop, pasture, forest, open land, recreation, transitional, brush land\/successional, orchard, and nursery). <\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Topography<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 no steep slopes (less than 5% slope).<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Transportation<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 only heavy and medium roads can be used for site access but it must be at least 250 feet away from the road.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"size\"><strong><em>Size<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2013 available site should have an area of least 50 acres (~ 20.2 hectares).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data set description:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All data in the GeoDB <em>Land_Suitability.gdb<\/em> came from MassGIS and are in Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, datum NAD83, unit meter (MASPCS83 meters).&nbsp; The files have been clipped (you know how to do this now) to the outline of the town of South Hadley.&nbsp; The included themes are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>South Hadley<\/em> \u2013 A polygon with the town limits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Hydro_arc<\/em>&nbsp; &#8211; rivers\/creeks, and lake\/pond\/wetland outlines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Hydro_poly<\/em> &#8211; lake\/pond\/wetland areas, used for final map production (outlines of this are in <em>Hydro_arc<\/em>; we won\u2019t be using this layer; here, only, for completeness)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Roads <\/em>&#8211; according to classes of the Dept. of Transportation. Only use roads classes 1-4<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Floods <\/em>&#8211; flood zones according to the EPA<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Slope <\/em>&#8211; slopes, classified into discrete ranges (steep &amp; flat).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Landuse_2005 <\/em>&#8211; land use classes from 2005 aerial photographs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background-color-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: At the end, you\u2019ll be asked, again, to create a cartographic model.&nbsp; So, as you go through the exercise, sketch the steps.&nbsp; Start with the original data, the different operations (selections\/extractions\/ unions, etc.) and the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Task 1 \u2013 Buffers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re creating some buffers, or areas of protection\/exclusion, around water bodies and major roads.&nbsp; Our final selection must exclude these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: Always study the results, both spatial and attributes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create a new project and explore the content of the GeoDB <em>Land_Suitability <\/em>as instructed in part 1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a buffer layer of the <em>Hydro_arc<\/em> using a linear distance of <strong>500 US Survey feet<\/strong> (CHECK THE UNIT!).&nbsp; Save the results as <em>Hydro_arc_Buffer<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extract Roads class 1-4 and save as <em>Major_Roads<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a buffer of <em>Major_Roads<\/em> using <strong>250 feet<\/strong>.&nbsp; Save the output as <em>Major_Roads_Buffer<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Task 2 \u2013 Overlay-Union<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"489\" height=\"168\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/Union.png\" alt=\"Union process\" class=\"wp-image-619\" style=\"width:283px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/Union.png 489w, https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/Union-300x103.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let\u2019s put those two buffers (exclusion zone) together using a geoprocessing operation called <strong>UNION<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Tools group in the Analysis tab get the UNION (Overlay Features).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add both buffers as input (drag &amp; drop or pick from down arrow at Input Features)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call the output <em>Buffers<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click RUN<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Study the resulting theme <em>Buffers<\/em> and represent it using Single Symbol<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These polygons represent areas that have to be excluded for the final site selection.&nbsp; It should show all the buffers together.&nbsp; We could have selected to dissolve some of those extra lines (remember how?), but it is not necessary now. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ALSO, notice that the Union operation is equivalent to a selection with the OR operator when making a selection: <strong>everything is included<\/strong>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background-color-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">(<em>HINT: You should have around 20,487 polygons in Buffers, if you haven\u2019t dissolved any polygon<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Task 3 \u2013Selection of suitable land<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Turn off all themes in the CP and add the <em>Landuse_2005<\/em>. Study its attribute table. The column called LU05_DESC has the names of the different types of land use.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Display this layer using Unique values for each class in LU05_DESC.&nbsp; Pick a palette you like.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If all the classes look the same gray color, click the button (on top of the symbols in the classes tab) that says \u201cAdd all values\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know by now that ArcGIS uses the ugliest combinations of colors possible when displaying layers. So let\u2019s represent this layer a little better with a previously made color\/symbol selection that has been saved in a \u201cLayer\u201d file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"8\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Symbology Pane of <em>Landuse_2005<\/em> theme.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on the hamburger (3 horizontal lines) button on the upper right and choose Import Symbology&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the new pane enter Symbology Layer by going to \\ex6 folder and pick a file called <em>landuse_2005.lyr<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verify that Source Field and Target Field is LUCODE<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click RUN and close the side Panes (except CP!).&nbsp; The theme should look nicer now.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This \u201clayer\u201d file (.lyr), source of the new symbology, is a special kind of file that saves the representation (legend) that you have designed, and allows it to be saved and reused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"9\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select in this theme the available land-use classes. You should select the following classes considered \u201copen\u201d or \u201cavailable\u201d:&nbsp; Cropland, pasture, forest, orchard, open land, brushland, transitional.&nbsp; These categories correspond to the classes \u201cY\u201d in the column named \u201cAvailable\u201d of the attribute table (I\u2019ve done this part of the job for you).&nbsp;&nbsp; You can select by attribute using: LU05_DESC = &#8216;Cropland&#8217; OR LU05_DESC = &#8216;Forest&#8217; OR LU05_DESC = &#8216;Open Land&#8217; OR \u2026\u2026 or just do available = &#8216;y&#8217;.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Export the selected features as <em>Good_Landuse<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Load to the CP the theme <em>Flood<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Study the attribute table and notice the field \u201cFlooded\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Represent it with unique values using the field Flooded\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the areas for FLOODED=N and save the selected areas as <em>Good_Flood <\/em>(areas that don\u2019t flood).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"12\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do the same for the theme <em>Slope<\/em>.&nbsp; (This layer was vectorized from a raster dataset, notice its appearance)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select the areas where Slope=flat.&nbsp; Export and save the selected features as <em>Good_Slope<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Task 4 \u2013 Overlay-Intersection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you study your \u201cGood\u201d themes one by one, you will notice that they are all over the place.&nbsp; However, we need to find areas that fulfill ALL the requirements at the same time, <em>i.e<\/em>. the piece of land has to be flat AND open land use AND not flooded.&nbsp; We\u2019ll accomplish this with a geoprocessing tool called <strong>INTERSECTION.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"336\" height=\"131\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/Intersect.png\" alt=\"Intersect process\" class=\"wp-image-618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/Intersect.png 336w, https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/Intersect-300x117.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ol start=\"13\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Tools group in the Analysis tab get the <strong>Pairwise Intersect<\/strong> (Overlay Features).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add <strong>two<\/strong> \u201cGood\u201d layers as input<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Call the output <em>Good_temp<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click RUN<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat the intersection using <em>Good_temp<\/em> and the other \u201cGood\u201d area (make sure it\u2019s the right one)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>.Call the output <em>Good_areas<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Study the result and represent it using Single Symbol.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background-color-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">NOTE: The tool input makes you believe that you may enter more than two input, but it won\u2019t work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These polygons represent areas where the three conditions (not flooded, flat slope, suitable land use) are concurrently satisfied. Notice that since this is equivalent to the AND operator and the result is more restricted than if we had used a Union. <em>(HINT: you should get 1014 features)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Task 5 \u2013 Putting it all together<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re almost there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"14\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Turn off all layers. Put <em>Buffers<\/em> on top of <em>Good_Areas<\/em> in the CP and <strong>turn on and off<\/strong> Buffers several times to get an idea of what\u2019s going to happen next.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We need to \u201cErase\u201d <em>Buffers<\/em> from <em>Good_Areas<\/em>. Do you remember what the buffers stand for?&nbsp; Therefore, we\u2019re going to use the buffers as \u201cerasers\u201d to remove the areas too close to roads and water from the good areas.&nbsp; The ERASE function does the opposite to CLIP.&nbsp; It uses one polygon feature to erase objects from another layer.&nbsp; Everything inside the Erase polygon will be eliminated leaving only what is outside of the erase polygon (again, opposite to Clip).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"15\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Analysis tab click the red Tools icon (this function is NOT in the Tools group menu).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"551\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/erase.png\" alt=\"Erase process\" class=\"wp-image-617\" style=\"width:277px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/erase.png 551w, https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/emarcano\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/965\/2025\/02\/erase-300x95.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 551px) 100vw, 551px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On top of the Geoprocessing pane that opens on the right click on Toolboxes and go to <strong>Analysis Tools\\Overlay\\Erase<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Input Features <em>Good_areas<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Erase Features (i.e. the eraser)<em> Buffers<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the output call it \u201c<em>All_areas<\/em>\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click RUN<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take a look at the resulting layer (<em>All_areas<\/em>) and compare it with <em>Good_areas. <\/em>Can you explain the differences?&nbsp; These are all the areas that meet <strong>all <\/strong>the requirements.&nbsp; You\u2019ll notice that some areas are too tiny, and that other areas are made up of multiple polygons (probably different land use types).&nbsp; We have to \u201cDissolve\u201d those extra lines in order to calculate the correct area of each parcel (a parcel is a contiguous piece of land).<em> <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background-color-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(Hint: you should have now 503 features)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"16\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From the Toolboxes go to <strong>Data Management\\Generalization\\Dissolve<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Input Feature <em>All_areas<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Output Feature <em>Final<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under Dissolve Field make sure nothing is selected<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>VERY IMPORTANT: At the bottom of the Dissolve pane <strong>uncheck<\/strong> the box where it says Create multipart features (we want individual polygons, not multipart). Click RUN.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Study the new layer and open its attribute table and see how many parcels are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 9. How many parcels (total) are available?&nbsp;<\/em><br><em>(Hint1: between 500-600) <\/em><br><em>(Hint 2: if you got only 1 item, you forgot to uncheck the \u201cCreate multipart features\u201d tick box)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"17\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the attribute table of <em>Final<\/em> notice the area values for each parcel in the last column called Shape_Area. These values are in square meters (meter is the original map unit for these layers).&nbsp; This is a property of GeoDB, areas and lengths ARE calculated automatically, unlike in Shapefiles.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to select only the parcels larger than ______ acres (see requirements at <a href=\"#part2\">beginning of part 2<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We could do a unit transformation now (from square meters to acres), but let\u2019s learn another method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"18\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add a new Field to <em>Final\u2019s<\/em> table.&nbsp; Make it Double and call it Acres.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure there\u2019s nothing selected, and then right click on the column Acres and choose Calculate Geometry.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Property<\/em> should be Area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Area Units: pick US Survey Acres and click OK<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We shouldn\u2019t have to pick Coordinate System as these layers are already in MASPCS83 meters (see layer descriptions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click OK<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"20\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select parcels larger than your area requirement and export them  as <em>Best_Parcels<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 10. How many parcels meet the minimum area requirement?&nbsp; (Hint: &lt;10)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"21\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the attribute table of <em>Best_parcels<\/em> add an <strong>integer<\/strong> column called \u201cParcel\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Parcel column, name the parcels with sequential numbers (1, 2, 3, 4\u2026)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right click on the heading of the other columns (Shape, OID, length, area, etc.) and choose \u201cHide field\u201d.&nbsp; Leave only Parcel and Acres columns visible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save your changes to the table<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, prepare a suitable layout with ONLY the parcels that satisfy ALL requirements (<em>Best_parcels)<\/em>, add the <em>South Hadley<\/em> town outline, <em>major roads<\/em>, <em>hydro arcs<\/em> and <em>hydro poly<\/em>. You may use, or not, the background layers (your choice, but I think this time it looks nice).&nbsp; Again, make the best map that you can make and make me proud. <strong>Before you finish the layout,<\/strong> do the following changes to it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"22\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Label the parcels with the corresponding labels created in the previous step (#21).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Click on the theme in the CP then click the labeling tab on top and choose the corresponding Field (Parcel)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"23\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Insert the attribute table in the layout<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the CP, <strong>select the layer you want to use<\/strong> (<em>Best_<\/em>parcels) to create the table<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the Insert tab, in the Map Surrounds group, click Table Frame<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the layout, draw a rectangle to define the limits of the table frame\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the Table Frame is empty: remember to select (highlight) the theme in the CP <strong>before <\/strong>drawing the frame<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If nothing, or no rows, is shown in the table frame, maybe only the column headings, double click on the table frame inserted in the layout and in the \u201cElement\u201d pane on the right, under Source\\Table make sure that <em>Final_Parcels<\/em> is selected and\/or Source\\Query select &#8220;All rows&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you see a red symbol <strong>[&#8230;]<\/strong> it means that it&#8217;s not showing the full table, expand the table<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" style=\"list-style-type:lower-alpha\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place the table in a suitable position in the map (it may go inside the map, near the parcels or just outside next to the legend, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"24\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Save layout as PDF.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 11. Upload map layout in PDF to Moodle as Ex6 _yourname_part2.pdf.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#fbef6a\"><em>Question 12.&nbsp; Create a cartographic model for part 2. Add a title and your name, and save it as PDF or graphic format (make sure I can read it). Save as Ex6_yourname_cartoModel2.pdf.  Upload to Moodle.<\/em><br><em>Hint: remember to list only the layers you actually used for the analysis, the procedures, and the child layers.
