You\u2019re not going to learn everything about it in a day or even a year, but that\u2019s OK \u2014 you have to start somewhere! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Camera Raw environment, you can make all kinds of adjustments to color, contrast, etc. There are many ways to do this; it&#8217;s more art than science. Here\u2019s a basic workflow for processing raw camera files:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-dark-gray-background-color has-dark-gray-color is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you start<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Set up your work environment to reduce glare on your monitor. <\/li><li>Turn up the monitor brightness so that the display is easy to see (if working on a laptop, plug in your charging cable). <\/li><li>Wipe your monitor clean of dust and junk.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-dark-gray-background-color has-dark-gray-color is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Import your images into the Camera Raw editor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Copy your images from the camera&#8217;s SD card to your computer. They will appear as Raw files with an extension like .CR2, .NEF, etc.<\/li><li>Select the camera image files you wish to work on <\/li><li>Right-click on them and open with Photoshop<\/li><li>The Camera Raw environment appears<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-dark-gray-background-color has-dark-gray-color is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adjust white balance <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/fimbeldocs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/661\/2022\/02\/ps1.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>Make fine adjustments to white balance with the eyedropper<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Expand the <strong>Basic<\/strong> controls and find the <strong>White Balance<\/strong> settings.<\/li><li>Select <strong>Custom<\/strong> white balance, then click on the eyedropper icon<\/li><li>With the eyedropper tool, select an area of your image that should be pure white. This could be the white patch of the color chart. Neutral gray works too.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-dark-gray-background-color has-dark-gray-color is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adjust exposure and contrast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/fimbeldocs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/661\/2022\/02\/ps2.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>Keep your eye on the histogram at upper right while moving the Exposure and Contrast sliders<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Look at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Image_histogram\" target=\"_blank\">histogram<\/a> at the upper right corner. <ul><li>If histogram has a flat spot on the right side (highlight), your image is <strong>underexposed<\/strong>: move the <strong>Exposure<\/strong> slider to the right to increase exposure<\/li><li>If histogram is flat on the left side (shadow), image is <strong>overexposed<\/strong>: slide left to reduce exposure<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Changes to exposure can also affect contrast (the range between darkest &amp; lightest pixels). <ul><li>Move the <strong>Contrast<\/strong> slider until image looks balanced.<\/li><li>For finer contrast control, you can move the <strong>Highlights, Shadows, Whites <\/strong>and<strong> Blacks<\/strong> sliders as well.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Be aware of how your changes affect both the image and the histogram. <ul><li>Look carefully at the entire image and use your aesthetic judgement. <\/li><li>Keep it subtle \u2014 most of these controls will make the image look weird \/ fake if pushed too far in either direction.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-dark-gray-background-color has-dark-gray-color is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reduce noise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/fimbeldocs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/661\/2022\/02\/ps3.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>Clean up that dirty gritty stuff with the Noise Reduction controls<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Raw files tend to have a grainy quality that you can smooth out for a more pleasing image. You&#8217;ll usually notice it more in images that needed bigger Exposure adjustments.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Collapse the <strong>Basic<\/strong> controls and expand the <strong>Detail<\/strong> section.<\/li><li>Click on the zoom control at lower left and set the magnification to at least 100%. <\/li><li>While holding down the spacebar (the cursor becomes a hand), click and drag your mouse to navigate to a detailed area of the image.<\/li><li>Experiment with the <strong>Noise Reduction<\/strong> and <strong>Color Noise Reduction<\/strong> controls. Try something like :<ul><li>Noise Reduction = 50; Detail = 20; Contrast = 20<\/li><li>Color Noise Reduction = 50; Detail = 20; Smoothness = 20<\/li><li>Changes that you made to Exposure and Contrast in previous steps may increase noise. Watch out for multicolored noise in shadow areas.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>You may not need to add <strong>Sharpening<\/strong>, but try the controls and see what happens.<\/li><li>Remember that every image is different and there is no &#8220;one size fits all&#8221; solution for these settings. Trust your eyeballs!<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-dark-gray-background-color has-dark-gray-color is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remove lens distortion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/fimbeldocs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/661\/2022\/02\/ps4.mp4\"><\/video><figcaption>Possibly the coolest feature of the Camera Raw tools: lens profiles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Open the <strong>Optics<\/strong> controls<\/li><li>Enable <strong>Lens Profile Correction<\/strong> (this fixes geometric lens distortion) <\/li><li>Enable <strong>Remove Chromatic Aberrations <\/strong>(fixes color artifacts introduced by the lens)<\/li><li>Through the magic of XMP metadata, Photoshop knows what kind of camera and lens the image was made with, and applies appropriate corrections. This is especially helpful when shooting flat artwork.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-dark-gray-background-color has-dark-gray-color is-style-wide\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next steps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Click on Open to continue working on the image in Photoshop.<\/li><li>Or just save it to native Photoshop format (.psd) to &#8220;bake in&#8221; your adjustments. This allows you to non-destructively edit your settings later! <\/li><li>To revert the raw file to its original state, simply trash the .xmp file.<\/li><li>The .xmp file is just a bunch of xml.
