The grapheme \u201cz\u201d was historically pronounced as the voiceless alveolar affricate consonant \/ts\/. In modern speech the \u201cz\u201d is pronounced as the voiceless dental fricative \/\u03b8\/. Another divergence of pronunciation is the grapheme \u201c\u00e7\u201d, which also represented the voiceless alveolar affricate consonant \/ts\/. In the modern Spanish reflex this grapheme is typically replaced with an orthographical \u201cz\u201d.
