Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita<\/span>
\n<\/span>mi ritrovai per una selva oscura,<\/span>
\n<\/span>ch\u00e9 la diritta via era smarrita.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Ahi quanto a dir qual era \u00e8 cosa dura<\/span>
\n<\/span>esta selva selvaggia e aspra e forte<\/span>
\n<\/span>che nel pensier rinova la paura!<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Tant’ \u00e8 amara che poco \u00e8 pi\u00f9 morte;<\/span>
\n<\/span>ma per trattar del ben ch’i’ vi trovai,<\/span>
\n<\/span>dir\u00f2 de l’altre cose ch’i’ v’ho scorte.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Io non so ben ridir com’ i’ v’intrai,<\/span>
\n<\/span>tant’ era pien di sonno a quel punto<\/span>
\n<\/span>che la verace via abbandonai.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Ma poi ch’i’ fui al pi\u00e8 d’un colle giunto,<\/span>
\n<\/span>l\u00e0 dove terminava quella valle<\/span>
\n<\/span>che m’avea di paura il cor compunto,<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>guardai in alto e vidi le sue spalle<\/span>
\n<\/span>vestite gi\u00e0 de’ raggi del pianeta<\/span>
\n<\/span>che mena dritto altrui per ogne calle.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Allor fu la paura un poco queta,<\/span>
\n<\/span>che nel lago del cor m’era durata<\/span>
\n<\/span>la notte ch’i’ passai con tanta pieta.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>E come quei che con lena affannata,<\/span>
\n<\/span>uscito fuor del pelago a la riva,<\/span>
\n<\/span>si volge a l’acqua perigliosa e guata,<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>cos\u00ec l’animo mio, ch’ancor fuggiva,<\/span>
\n<\/span>si volse a retro a rimirar lo passo<\/span>
\n<\/span>che non lasci\u00f2 gi\u00e0 mai persona viva.<\/span><\/p>\n

Poi ch’\u00e8i posato un poco il corpo lasso,<\/span>
\n<\/span>ripresi via per la piaggia diserta,<\/span>
\n<\/span>s\u00ec che ‘l pi\u00e8 fermo sempre era ‘l pi\u00f9 basso.<\/span><\/p>\n


\n<\/span>Ed ecco, quasi al cominciar de l’erta,<\/span>
\n<\/span>una lonza leggera e presta molto,<\/span>
\n<\/span>che di pel macolato era coverta;<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>e non mi si partia dinanzi al volto,<\/span>
\n<\/span>anzi ‘mpediva tanto il mio cammino,<\/span>
\n<\/span>ch’i’ fui per ritornar pi\u00f9 volte v\u00f2lto.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Temp’ era dal principio del mattino,<\/span>
\n<\/span>e ‘l sol montava ‘n s\u00f9 con quelle stelle<\/span>
\n<\/span>ch’eran con lui quando l’amor divino<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>mosse di prima quelle cose belle;<\/span>
\n<\/span>s\u00ec ch’a bene sperar m’era cagione<\/span>
\n<\/span>di quella fiera a la gaetta pelle<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>l’ora del tempo e la dolce stagione;<\/span>

\n<\/span>When I had journeyed half of our life\u2019s way,<\/span>
\n<\/span>I found myself within a shadowed forest,<\/span>
\n<\/span>for I had lost the path that does not stray.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Ah, it is hard to speak of what it was,<\/span>
\n<\/span>that savage forest, dense and difficult,<\/span>
\n<\/span>which even in recall renews my fear:<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>so bitter\u2014death is hardly more severe!<\/span>
\n<\/span>But to retell the good discovered there,<\/span>
\n<\/span>I\u2019ll also tell the other things I saw.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I cannot clearly say how I had entered<\/span>
\n<\/span>the wood; I was so full of sleep just at<\/span>
\n<\/span>the point where I abandoned the true path.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>But when I\u2019d reached the bottom of a hill\u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>it rose along the boundary of the valley<\/span>
\n<\/span>that had harassed my heart with so much fear\u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I looked on high and saw its shoulders clothed<\/span>
\n<\/span>already by the rays of that same planet<\/span>
\n<\/span>which serves to lead men straight along all roads.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>At this my fear was somewhat quieted;<\/span>
\n<\/span>for through the night of sorrow I had spent,<\/span>
\n<\/span>the lake within my heart felt terror present.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>And just as he who, with exhausted breath,<\/span>
\n<\/span>having escaped from sea to shore, turns back<\/span>
\n<\/span>to watch the dangerous waters he has quit,<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>so did my spirit, still a fugitive,<\/span>
\n<\/span>turn back to look intently at the pass<\/span>
\n<\/span>that never has let any man survive.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>I let my tired body rest awhile.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Moving again, I tried the lonely slope\u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>my firm foot always was the one below.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>And almost where the hillside starts to rise\u2014<\/span>
\n<\/span>look there!\u2014a leopard, very quick and lithe,<\/span>
\n<\/span>a leopard covered with a spotted hide.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>He did not disappear from sight, but stayed;<\/span>
\n<\/span>indeed, he so impeded my ascent<\/span>
\n<\/span>that I had often to turn back again.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>The time was the beginning of the morning;<\/span>
\n<\/span>the sun was rising now in fellowship<\/span>
\n<\/span>with the same stars that had escorted it<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>when Divine Love first moved those things of beauty;<\/span>
\n<\/span>so that the hour and the gentle season<\/span>
\n<\/span>gave me good cause for hopefulness on seeing<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>that beast before me with his speckled skin;<\/span>
\n<\/span>but hope was hardly able to prevent<\/span>
\n<\/span>the fear I felt when I beheld a lion.<\/span>
