In 2013, ISOC changed. On paper, it was nothing more than the shift of a single word \u2014 from \u201cOrientation\u201d to \u201cOrganizing\u201d \u2014 but for its members and the surrounding community, this marked the beginning of a transformation. What began as a group welcoming new international students during pre-orientation quickly grew into a vibrant student-led organization and cultural cornerstone on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally named the \u201cInternational Student Orientation Committee,\u201d ISOC was responsible for pre-orientation activities for incoming Mount Holyoke students from outside the United States. In 2013, ISOC assumed additional responsibilities at the College, evolving into the International Student Organizing Committee. The newly-named organization strove to build and foster a strong global community on campus through various events and programming throughout the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over its history, ISOC has organized everything from informational sessions on taxes and banking to photo exhibitions and performances that honor the lived experiences and heritage of international students. Signature events such as Global Fest, the International Open Mic Night, and the International Student Senior Tassel Ceremony reflect ISOC\u2019s lasting impact. Many events have evolved, disappeared, or emerged anew, mirroring the shifting needs of the student body and the changing world beyond Mount Holyoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This portion of the exhibition offers a window into ISOC\u2019s evolution, showing how it adapted to global events and campus dynamics. We see open mic nights responding to the devastating hurricanes in Puerto Rico in 2017, orientation slides explaining US immigration systems as they changed, and longstanding traditions that celebrate identity and belonging. It also honors the people and partnerships that made it possible: local businesses, student organizations across the Five Colleges, and countless individuals committed to a more inclusive campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through archival materials, journals, and photographs, this portion of the exhibit captures the many ways ISOC affirms and uplifts international students \u2014 not just during their first days, but throughout their Mount Holyoke journeys. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
