Mary Matthews’ Quilt

Matthews’ album quilt, circa 1887

This album quilt was made for Mary Matthews before she left for Monastir in 1888. Mary’s mother, Jane, probably organized this quilting project with members of her group in or near Millville, New York. The top center square contains a unique Pythagorean Theorem design apparently embroidered by Mary’s Aunt Emma Louise Gillette, Mount Holyoke Class of 1851.

We are grateful to Virginia Capan, Mary Matthews’ grand niece to whom this quilt was willed, for loaning this beautiful artifact for the exhibition.
