Throughout the existence of the MHN<\/em>, there were very few students of color on the staff at any given time. In 1979, a group of students proposed to the Choragos <\/em>editorial board a section specifically written by \u201cThird World\u201d students, or students of color. The need to address issues of racism in the area had become more pressing after a cross burning and subsequent protest by Black students at Amherst College earlier that year. After much debate and discussion, Third World Voice <\/em>was created. The two-page spread was managed by a staff of students of color that operated separately from the Choragos <\/em>board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Third World Voice<\/em> was home to news features on current events in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as opinion pieces and creative works. \u201cThe Ebony Quill<\/a>,\u201d a column centered on the experiences of Black women, had been published in Choragos<\/em> since 1972 but was included in the pages of the Third World Voice<\/em> after 1979. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name was later changed to simply Voices!<\/em> in 1990 as the term \u201cThird World\u201d became outdated. Voices! <\/em>continued throughout the decade before last appearing in the spring of 2002. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
