In 1979, a group of students proposed to the <em>Choragos <\/em>editorial board a section specifically written by \u201cThird World\u201d students, or students of color. The need to address issues of racism in the area had become more pressing after a cross burning and subsequent protest by Black students at Amherst College earlier that year. After much debate and discussion, <em>Third World Voice <\/em>was created. The two-page spread was managed by a staff of students of color that operated separately from the <em>Choragos <\/em>board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>Third World Voice<\/em> was home to news features on current events in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, as well as opinion pieces and creative works. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/blackhistoryatmhc\/the-ebony-quill\/\">The Ebony Quill<\/a>,\u201d  a column centered on the experiences of Black women, had been published in <em>Choragos<\/em> since 1972 but was included in the pages of the <em>Third World Voice<\/em> after 1979. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/compass.fivecolleges.edu\/islandora\/object\/mtholyoke%3A133800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1002\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/mhcnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/988\/2025\/04\/ThirdWorldVoice-1002x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32\" style=\"width:700px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/mhcnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/988\/2025\/04\/ThirdWorldVoice-1002x1024.jpg 1002w, https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/mhcnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/988\/2025\/04\/ThirdWorldVoice-294x300.jpg 294w, https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/mhcnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/988\/2025\/04\/ThirdWorldVoice-768x785.jpg 768w, https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/mhcnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/988\/2025\/04\/ThirdWorldVoice.jpg 1182w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1002px) 100vw, 1002px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>From the first Choragos issue to feature Third World Voice, \u201cThird World students speak for themselves,\u201d September 13, 1979.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name was later changed to simply <em>Voices!<\/em> in 1990 as the term \u201cThird World\u201d became outdated. <em>Voices! <\/em>continued throughout the decade before last appearing in the spring of 2002. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Throughout the existence of the MHN, there were very few students of color on the staff at any given time.
