Suzie Ellis Stoyer was the an active MHOC member in her time and chair of the Outing Club’s annual song contest. The song contest was a campus-wide competition in which each dorm could enter a “short, catchy, tune with words about Mount Holyoke, suited to singing around campfires and in dormitories.”
In winter 2021 Suzie met with members of current club leadership via Zoom. Susie told us many stories of her time with the club and the role the club played in the larger school community at that time. She told us the heart-warming story of how she met her husband Bob through Intercollegiate Outing Club Association (IOCA) events. Suzie shared how involved the Outing Club was with other school’s clubs and IOCA. “Every fall there was a huge IOCA gathering sponsored by RPI held at Lake George, NY which MHOC always participated in.”
Suzie shared an image of her with the canoe that Bob gifted her for their wedding. “The [photo] is the MHOC emblem which Bob had already painted on the canoe when he gave it to me on our wedding day. He repainted it for this picture. After 62 years it needed it!!!”
