Consider aspect ratio when shooting videos/photos on mobile device

Aspect ratio of an image is the image’s width to height ratio. In order to avoid black bars in the sides of your iMovie video, you must use the correct aspect ratio for your project. Most videos today have either 4 : 3 or the  16 : 9 (also called widescreen) aspect ratio.  It’s good if you know what aspect ratio the video you are importing to iMovie has.
You can learn more about aspect ratios here.

iMovie are 16:9 only

This means that videos and photos you have taken from your phone might be distorted when you import them into iMovie. We can see in the preview window that the video is very small and there are black bars on left and right.

This is because the video is shoot when the phone is “portrait”. When the phone is “portrait”, the video is recorded in 4:3 ratio. So try to shoot your video in landscape mode.
