A simple looking wood box with a light switch on one side has a plexiglass front which reads “Over mountains steep,” with the words angled on either side of a brown triangle. Just behind this more images and words can be glimpsed. From the side of the box, the plexiglass panels protrudes, allowing a viewer to remove each and see the next layer.

This work explores simple imagery and composition with abstract forms and their interaction with words. Twisting the words on their sides or placing them over, around, or on the images. How a simple color palette can convey many different places or objects. And symbolism for objects and abstract concepts. It also considers the impact of visible layers by using plexiglass as a material. The way the first and second panel over lay each other with reversed triangles or how one panel can add more color to the one in front as in “Past plains continuous.” Finally, it pushes the boundary of book form using unconventional materials with wood, plexiglass, paint, and light. Books do not need to just be made with paper.

The poem of this book was inspired by the ability to travel while remaining at home during the Covid-19 outbreak. We may not be able to travel physically but we can travel with the power of imagination and creativity with our minds.
