What is the secret to a happy life?
Many have asked this question in striving for happiness. And there are many, many answers; each as unique to the person who asks as to the person who answers. One thought is to find balance in one’s life. This at least is the answer the artist has come to herself and set out to portray balance in a piece of artwork.
Over time Built to Grow has developed from one idea to the next, always with balance in mind. In its final form, of paper, wire, and light, it grapples with the larger question of natural versus man made. As an object, Built to Grow, uses a contrast of light and paper, flowing form and rigid structure to capture the attention. This work makes a subtle push towards the ideas of balance between the natural and man made.
Using handcrafted paper made with thai kozo fibers melded into a a more flowing form it appears as a natural, growing shape. Yet the circles, balanced as they are, are less than natural. The lighting itself creates more conflict, it is unnatural in its source yet, the soft, off-white glow is more calming and organic in feeling. This tension raises questions of what is the balance within our world? Even farther, what is the balance within ourself of these elements?
The sculptural work drives at certain questions of the world and our lives but only if one choses to look closely. Overall the piece is a simple, but elegant object.
