Find\Trust

Trust is an accordion artist book embracing a simple aesthetic. Circles appear on the pages, interlocked, separate, and, sometimes, broken. Interwoven with these, words are handwritten across the book, spelling out a poem:

Circles weave. Words grieve.
Vulnerabilities. Liabilities.
Voices hit. Doubts knit.
Torn start. Broken apart.
Tending and mending.
Supportive aid. Friendship made.
Truth bound. Trust found.

The work examines poetry, rhythm, storytelling through a simple narrative, and the interaction between words, images, and book format. The double beat of the poem gives rise to various imagery, including footsteps, dancing, raindrops, or a heartbeat. The poem itself has a beginning, middle, and ending with an extremely simple story that speaks through an emotional journey. The words acknowledge the circles in the very beginning and the circles support the words through the narrative as they become more broken as the words become more troubled. In this, the words and images support each other within the accordion format, a format which speaks to a journey like nature of the contents.

The artist book, Trust, is only one half of this work. The other is a video projection of circles that move and change which is cast onto the book. This part of the work encompasses the “Find” of the title. In viewing most artist books, the audience has greater control of the experience, which pages to flip, in which order, and even the simple choice to open the book, then compared to artwork considered more traditional. The video aspect adds a layer that removes some of this control. While the audience’s interaction with the work is still necessary, what happens as they view it is no longer completely within their control.

Images of the entire work to be added soon.
