Index cards, hole punched and tied with black ribbon sits in front of a glass bowl filled with more, half folded, index cards. A piece of paper to one side reads, “Just Answers” followed by, “Answer. What does a question look for?” and “What is an answer without a question?” Upon looking through the stack of index cards, the artist book called Just Answers, a viewer sees ‘Question:’ printed on one side of each card and ‘Answer:’ followed by a handwritten word. A page which lies near this installation is titled instructions and prompts the viewed to read through Just Answers, then to write their own questions in response the to handwritten words in the book and add it to the bowl.
This conceptual work explores our view of questions, answers , and the interplay between the two. Among these, the work raises questions about the role that questions and answers play in our everyday life, how for some it is easier to determine answers than to determine questions. It reveals how there are many questions to an answer but often only one answer to a question.
Just Answers is an artwork that approaches a very conceptual topic and treats it like a thought experiment. At the surface, it is an exercise to change the normal mode of thought: instead of question to answer it asks those who interact to instead think from answer to question. Deeper though, it also shows how individual each participant is, from the tiny choices in words to the very questions they write.
