Likenesses penned onto the soft off-white of handmade paper made with Thai Kozo. Each page, with one drawing, stands vertical, held in place by thin wooden rods. Cotton and paper threads in black, gray, and white trail from the pages, appearing to be an extension of the penned lines, they loop, join, and continue along the paper cover table. All slowly join together leading to the center knot. A knot to hold them together.
This knot represents the shared community between these individuals. That is just what this artwork is about, community. But often artwork focuses on messages and meanings of this larger group; who they are, what they do, why they are there. Just as important are the individuals within such a community. They are the building blocks that came together for their own reasons.
This artwork focuses on these individuals. Each person, posed as they wanted to, are part of the Mount Holyoke Community, held together by threads of shared identity, and standing on the same ground. While this piece speaks of community, it speaks more of individuals and of their strength together and apart.
