Together, we waited in a very long line to board our flight. As usual, I brought way too many things onto the airplane in my carry-on luggage. This was a huge mistake because the plane for our flight to Yaoundé, Cameroon was extremely small and old. Making matters worse, I was one of the last passengers to board the pane, so it was beyond difficult to find a free space for my huge bag.

And then, I encountered my first culture shock.

I was in an airplane filled with Cameroonians, other Africans, many passengers from countries different than my own, and all of their luggage. It was necessary that I speak to the other passengers in French to rearrange their carry-on luggage to make space for my own. My first attempt was unsuccessful. The woman who’s bag I had to move to make space for my own was very bothered by my attempt, so I tried another space. After many things had fallen on my head and many bothered passengers had told me “there is no more space” (when there clearly was), a nice man finally helped me find a space for my bag.

This was a learning experience that showed me that it was necessary that I be assertive, confident, and unafraid of the uncomfortable during my stay in Cameroon.

À l’aéroport au France, j’ai rencontré Emma, une autre fille dans mon programme de voyage qui a le même vol que moi.
