Mon arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 Yaound\u00e9 \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s sp\u00e9ciale. Quand je suis arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019a\u00e9roport Nsimalen, il y avait beaucoup de monde et beaucoup d\u2019acclamations et sourires. C\u2019\u00e9tait un moment de c\u00e9l\u00e9bration, mais pas exactement pour mon arriv\u00e9e. Quand j\u2019ai travers\u00e9 la douane, l\u2019\u00e9quipe du foot du Cameroun a gagn\u00e9 le match demi-finale de la Coupe d\u2019Afrique des Nations. Il y a plusieurs ann\u00e9es depuis l\u2019\u00e9quipe du Cameroun n\u2019avait gagn\u00e9 une finale de la Coupe d\u2019Afrique des Nations, donc les Camerounais \u00e9taient tr\u00e8s heureux. \u00c0 l\u2019a\u00e9roport, Emma et moi \u00e9tions accueillies par Asa et Ariane. Pendant la plupart de notre trajet d\u2019une heure \u00e0 l\u2019h\u00f4tel, les rues \u00e9taient remplies des gens qui ont brandi des drapeaux camerounais et qui ont fait du bruit avec des couvercles des marmites en m\u00e9tal. C\u2019\u00e9tait vraiment une grande c\u00e9l\u00e9bration et un moment de fiert\u00e9 pour Cameroun. L\u2019excitation des Camerounais pour leur \u00e9quipe du foot est comme l\u2019enthousiasme des Am\u00e9ricains pour leurs \u00e9quipes du football am\u00e9ricaine. Par co\u00efncidence, tout s\u2019est pass\u00e9 la m\u00eame weekend du Superbowl du football Am\u00e9ricain.<\/p>\n

Le jour apr\u00e8s mon arriv\u00e9e au Cameroun, j\u2019ai regard\u00e9 le match final de la Coupe d\u2019Afrique des Nations avec Ariane et sa famille. Et puis, la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration a continu\u00e9\u00a0! Le Cameroun a gagn\u00e9 le match final de la Coupe d\u2019Afrique des Nations. Apr\u00e8s le match, nous sommes\u00a0all\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019a\u00e9roport pour venir chercher Amber, la derni\u00e8re fille du programme. Nous sommes all\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019a\u00e9roport bien avant l\u2019arriv\u00e9e de Amber, donc nous avons eu environs trois heures de temps libre. Pendant les trois heures, nous avons rencontr\u00e9 Simon, notre nouvel ami. Simon est une garde militaire qui prot\u00e8ge des touristes \u00e0 l\u2019a\u00e9roport Nsimalen. Simon vient de Douala, a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 en France, et est un champion national de karat\u00e9.<\/p>\n

My arrival in Yaound\u00e9 was very special. When I arrived at the airport, there were lots of people, cheering, and smiles. It was a moment of celebration…but not exactly to celebrate\u00a0my arrival. The moment when I went through customs, the Cameroonian soccer team won the semi-final of the African Cup of Nations. It has been many years since the Cameroonian soccer team has qualified for the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, so the people of Cameroon were very excited. At the airport, Emma and I were welcomed by Asa, another girl in our program, and Ariane, the director of our program. During the majority of our trip to the hotel, the roads were filled with people waving\u00a0the Cameroonian flag and making noise with metal trash can lids to celebrate the soccer team’s success. It was a big moment of\u00a0pride and joy for Cameroon. The\u00a0excitement of Cameroonians for their soccer team was like the enthusiasm Americans have for their favorite football teams.\u00a0Coincidentally, this all happened the same weekend as the American Football SuperBowl.<\/p>\n

The day after my arrival in Cameroon, I watched the final match of the African Cup of Nations with the director of my program and her family. And then…the celebration continued! Cameroon won the final match of the African Cup of Nations against Egypt. Just after the game, we went\u00a0to the airport to pick up Amber, the last girl in our program to arrive. We went to\u00a0the airport well in advance of Amber’s scheduled arrival, so we had about three hours of free time. During that time, we met Simon, our new friend and personal bodyguard (not really, but basically yes).<\/p>\n
