Of How the Archpreist Went to Explore the Mountain Range and about What Happened to Him with the Mountain Girl<\/strong><\/p>\n

The apostle orders us to try all things a make a test.<\/p>\n

So I set out to try the mountains \u2013what a crazy quest.<\/p>\n

I lost my mule, I had no food, and there was none to find.<\/p>\n

Who seeks bread that\u2019s better than wheat bread has left his sense behind.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It was the month of March, the day of good St. Meder\u2019s feast<\/p>\n

The road I had to take was up the long Lozoya Pass.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t keep from running into storms of snow and hail.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho seeks what he has never lost should lose all that he has.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At the summit of the pass I was astonished and alarmed.<\/p>\n

Beside a bush I found a big cowgirl who looked severe.<\/p>\n

I asked her who she was and \u201cBumpkin!\u201d she replied to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Bumpkin, the uncouth, strong girl who kidnaps men right here.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cI guard this mountain pass and I collect the legal toll.<\/p>\n

Whoever pays it freely I let pass and vex no more.<\/p>\n

But if he won\u2019t pay up, I fleece him quickly of his purse.<\/p>\n

So pay up, or you\u2019ll find how grain is threshed out on the floor.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She blocked the road completely \u2013it was narrow, just a trail<\/p>\n

Picked out through boulders by the cowherds \u2013 I could not pass by.<\/p>\n

Thus, seeing I was in a fix and hapless, stiff with cold,<\/p>\n

I said, \u201cDear girl, you can\u2019t get blood from turnips, so why try?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cLet me go on, dear fried, I\u2019ll give you gifts the mountain way.<\/p>\n

But if you please, tell me what\u2019s customary in this land.<\/p>\n

For as the saying goes, \u2018the one who asks won\u2019t go astray.\u2019<\/p>\n

For God\u2019s sake, give me shelter, or I\u2019ll die of cold today!\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Bumpkin replied, \u201cWell beggars can\u2019t be choosers, that\u2019s well known.<\/p>\n

But promise something nice at least, don\u2019t make me mad at you.<\/p>\n

If you will give, don\u2019t fear that snow will wet you to the bone.<\/p>\n

I advise you to agree before I snatch up all you own.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And as the old girl says, while at the skein she spits and spins,<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dear, one who can\u2019t help it unwillingly lets himself die.<\/p>\n

So frozen, stiff and scared, complaining of her impudence,<\/p>\n

I promised brooch, medallion, new-made pouch of rabbit skins.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She tossed me right up on her shoulders at this good response,<\/p>\n

To me it was mere nothing to be carried through the snow,<\/p>\n

She saved me thus from trudging over icy streams and slopes.<\/p>\n
