The count Rollanz, beneath a pine he sits,;
\nTurning his eyes towards Spain, he begins
\nRemembering so many divers things:
\nSo many lands where he went conquering,
\nAnd France the Douce, the heroes of his kin,
\nAnd Charlemagne, his lord who nourished him.
\nNor can he help but weep and sigh at this.
\nBut his own self, he’s not forgotten him,
\nHe owns his faults, and God’s forgiveness bids:
\n“Very Father, in Whom no falsehood is,
\nSaint Lazaron from death Thou didst remit,
\nAnd Daniel save from the lions’ pit;
\nMy soul in me preserve from all perils
\nAnd from the sins I did in life commit!”
\nHis right-hand glove, to God he offers it
\nSaint Gabriel from’s hand hath taken it.
\nOver his arm his head bows down and slips,
\nHe joins his hands: and so is life finish’d.
\nGod sent him down His angel cherubin,
\nAnd Saint Michael, we worship in peril;
\nAnd by their side Saint Gabriel alit;
