When Juan Ruiz wrote El Libro de Buen Amor<\/em>, the language of the time was Old Spanish, also known as Old Castilian. This early form of Spanish was before any type of consonantal readjustment was introduced into the language system.<\/p>\n

For example, the voiceless velar fricative \/x\/ did not exist in Old Spanish. Previously in Old Spanish the phoneme \/\u0292\/, written with the grapheme \u201cx\u201d would evolve into the Modern Spanish phoneme \/x\/ written with the graphemes \u201cg\u201d or \u201cj\u201d<\/p>\n

> Example: Old Spanish DEXA [de\u0292a] evolves to\u00a0Modern Spanish DEJA [dexar]<\/p>\n

Similarly the Old Spanish the phoneme \/\u0292\/, written with the graphemes \u201cjo,u,a\u201d , \u201ci\u201d, \u201cge,i\u201d would later evolve into the Modern Spanish phoneme \/x\/ written with the graphemes \u201cg\u201d or \u201cj\u201d<\/p>\n

> Example: Old Spanish ESCOGE [esko\u0292e] evolves to\u00a0Modern Spanish ESCOGE [eskoxer]<\/p>\n

The Old Spanish affricate voiced alveolar phenome \/dz\/ was written with the grapheme \u201cz\u201d, which later evolved into the Modern Spanish fricative alveolar voiceless \/s\/ which is represtned with the grapheme \u201cs\u201d or in some seseantes varieties \u201cce,i\u201d or \u201cza,o,u\u201d<\/p>\n

> Example: Old Spanish FAZE [fadze] evolves to\u00a0FACER [faser]<\/p>\n

The Old Spanish affricate voiceless alveolar \/ts\/ was written with the graphemes \u201c\u00e7a, o, u\u201d and \u201cce,i\u201d, then later evolves into the Modern Spanish interdental voiceless fricative \/\u03b8\/ or the fricative alveolar voiceless \/s\/ for some seseantes varieties<\/p>\n

> Example: MAR\u00c7O [martso] evolves to MARZO [mar\u03b8o] or [marso]<\/p>\n
