Prior to deciding on layout and furniture needs, we wanted to investigate student habits and preferences in order to create a space that aligned with their needs.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-815\" src=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/uxprojects\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/303\/2019\/07\/frost2016-2.jpg\" alt=\"Floor map of Frost Level 2\" width=\"800\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/uxprojects\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/303\/2019\/07\/frost2016-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/uxprojects\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/303\/2019\/07\/frost2016-2-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/commons.mtholyoke.edu\/uxprojects\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/303\/2019\/07\/frost2016-2-768x496.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Goals\/questions:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Understand the \u201ctype\u201d of space that students wanted Level 2 to be, in relation to other study spaces already available on other floors<\/li>\n<li>Identify layout elements and furniture types that would match students\u2019 needs in the space<\/li>\n<li>Draw from existing study behaviors to inform our design, and identify opportunities to enhance the space<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Methods:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Floor sweep observations<\/li>\n<li>Student interviews<\/li>\n<li>Floor plan cognitive mapping exercise<\/li>\n<li>Do\/Have exercise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Floor sweep observations<\/strong> were scheduled for a peak traffic period within the semester, and captured furniture use as well as study behaviors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student interviews<\/strong> began with a description of a specific instance of coming to study at Level 2, and included a discussion of elements that worked within the space, the distinguishing features of the space, how they would describe the space to a friend, how the space would function as an ideal study area.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Do\/Have exercise<\/strong> asked students to reflect upon their story about coming to Level 2 to study, and list out specific examples of what they wanted to be able to Do in the space, as well as what they needed to Have in the space.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>floor plan cognitive mapping exercise<\/strong> asked students to draw out their ideal study space, using the Level 2 floor map. Students were given pens of three different colors, and asked to change the color of the pen every sixty seconds. This provided a visual indicator of what students drew first, second, and last.\u00a0 Finally, students talked through the maps with the interviewer, explaining elements and telling the story of the space.<\/p>\n<h3>Statistics\/Data<\/h3>\n<p><b>Sample size:\u00a0<\/b>floor sweep observations: varied (one week of observation of floor occupants, several times a day)<br \/>\ninterviews and exercises: 5 students, various class years<\/p>\n<p><b>Dates: <\/b>Spring-Summer 2015<\/p>\n<p><b>Campus\/College: <\/b>Amherst College<\/p>\n<p><b>Contact:\u00a0 <\/b>Kelly Dagan, Research, Instruction &amp; User Experience Librarian<\/p>\n<p><b>Team: \u00a0 <\/b>UX Librarian and Space Committee<\/p>\n<h3>Action Taken<\/h3>\n<p>As a result of study findings, we developed the Level 2 floor plan to create a space that supported students\u2019 desires for a relaxed and productive atmosphere, with support for collaborative and congenial (\u201calone together\u201d) work. We were careful to maintain the \u201cgoldilocks\u201d noise level that students described through our sound zone signage and furniture options.
