3D Printed Cabin

This tiny cabin was 3D printed in Amsterdam as a way for people to reconsider how they interact with the city and the experience of living in an urban environment, by creating a small oasis in the middle of an empty urban zone. By 3D printing the cabin, the DUS architecture group hopes to create sustainable housing solutions for cities.

I really enjoy how simple this cabin is, and the way architectural elements, such as the texture of the cabin exterior, are repeated throughout the design, like in the front walkway and the stoop. This texture of cubes mashed together mimics the square elements of tall buildings in an urban setting and upends it by mashing them together in a more chaotic and natural way. Like the Getaway cabins discussed in the previous post, this cabin also relies on a large window, but in this cabin it is not for the purpose of enjoying the woods and letting the wood of the cabin flow straight into the trees. First of all there is no wood in the cabin, secondly, there are only a few young saplings around the cabin. Perhaps the purpose of this window is to have the interior of the cabin flow out, directly into the city.
