Cognitive Flexibility

A big project that I wished to step away from was my senior project. My original plan was to create an architecture model of my ideal school, this project was supposed to be done within five months. It required much research, a total of ten bibliographies, outside help/work such as internships, volunteer work, or part-time job. For my project specifically, I needed to contact an architect to revise my blueprint and model, as well as an internship. After three months, I was not able to advance much besides my research and finding an architect, I was nowhere near starting my model. With the two months left, I realized that my goal was not achievable and decided to start over. I knew it was going to be difficult, but I still wanted to continue. After consulting with my mentor, I decided to do something more doable. I had to redo all my research, but I was able to finish my project on time. If I had given up sooner, I would have had more time to work on another project and without much stress.

Another situation that most of us experienced was the pandemic. It was new for everyone, people were scared and felt uneasy about the unknown. Eventually we had to adapt to this new way of living. For us students, it was also a big change, we had online classes, virtual graduations, and events. Some people had to work from home, making it hard to concentrate in small places for both students and adults to work. My dad would constantly say “it is all in our heads”, meaning if we didn’t think too much about it, we would not notice the change around us. We needed to focus on our own business to find this transition easier.
