An herbarium is a collection of dried plants that are typically pressed, mounted on paper, labeled, and organized by taxonomy. “Herbarium” refers to a wide range of plant collections, from a small book of aesthetically pressed flowers to a carefully curated scientific collection.
This exhibit explores the herbaria collection at Mount Holyoke College, which was established by the botany department and professors Lydia Shattuck (class of 1851), Henrietta Hooker (class of 1873), and Alma Stokey. Selected herbaria in this exhibit were pressed and assembled by the following students: Elizabeth A. Smith, x-class of 1849, Frances L. McMaster, class of 1861, Orra E. Miller, class of 1861, Sabra C. Snell, class of 1866, Mary E. Bond, class of 1883, and Alice A. Rogers, class of 1912.
This exhibit was co-curated by Kimberly Dildine, class of 2016, and Sophie Glasco, class of 2026.
