Lydia Shattuck was head of the Botany Department from 1851 to 1889 and a member of the class of 1851. When botany was not in season, she taught chemistry. Shattuck’s research focused on the classification of plants and setting up collections, eventually creating a herbarium of over 7,000 plants from around the world for Mount Holyoke.
