Henrietta Hooker originally taught mathematics at Mount Holyoke, until, under the guidance of Lydia Shattuck, she began teaching botany, with her first full length course in 1887 covering mosses. Hooker eventually became the head of the botany department from 1899 to 1909 and was also a member of the class of 1873.
