Welcome to Philosophy @ the Virtual Art Museum, a website designed to foster philosophical discussions using works of art.
This website is also available in other languages:
Français Español 中文 (Chinese) Deutsch
As you can see, the site consists of six units – from portraits and landscapes to conceptual art and photography – featuring three or four works of art in each. (Please note that you can enlarge each image by clicking on it.) For each work, there are a series of between three and five questions that assist you in articulating your response to the work. Once you have finished discussing the questions for all the works in a unit, you can go on to consider a series of philosophical questions that are based on issues raised by the works in that unit. These questions concern issues in a variety of different philosophical areas, such as the philosophy of mind and ethics as well as the philosophy of art. We hope that you find this website a great way of entering into philosophical discussions.
