EmotoBots Pt.1

Using emotional intelligence can help us manage our time better for assignments. In this class for example, it could help me identify my emotions when I’m struggling with a project. Sometimes I tend to ignore my feelings when I am frustrated. When I know I am having trouble, or have been working on something for too long, I ignore my surroundings and continue my own work. For example, when I was completing my welcome bot, I was in Fimbel for approximately five hours straight. Sanding every body part until It was to my liking. This was mainly because I was too scared to use the sanding machine, so I did it by hand. If I had simply acknowledged my frustration and asked for help, I would have finished a lot quicker.

However, after I finished sanding, I needed to drill holes for the legs and arms, but I was a bit reluctant to use it. This time however, I asked a classmate for help, even though I was not sure about it and did not know her that well. She was very nice and helped me throughout this process, and explained how to use the drill, even though I had participated in Kris’s workshop. This shows that I was able to practice my EQ, the same day I had trouble with it. After this interaction I have been more confident in asking for guidance, compared to the beginning of the semester when I did not.

This example does not mean I am able to exercise my EQ effectively every day; this requires practice. It also certainly does not mean I am able to master it within one day. It just means that I am more comfortable asking a familiar person for help rather than a stranger, which is not bad. For future projects I will challenge myself to ask other people, such as the TA’s, or the Fimbel workers. Once I am able to identify my emotions with a clear mindset, the rest will be easier. Not only will it benefit me, but I can also try to help those who need it. Next time I see someone struggling like me, I will try to help, that way we both benefit from using emotional intelligence.
