Etching by Piranesi
Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Italian, (1720-1778)
Scenographia Panthei ejusque pronai absque hodiernis retaurationibus [View of the Pantheon and its entrance, without present-day restorations] from the series Il Campo Marzio dell’Antica Roma [The Campus Martius of Ancient Rome]
Etching, brown ink on ivory wove paper
Gift of Professor Louise Fitz Randolph
MH 1972.75.4.P.RII
Records show that Randolph spent the equivalent of ten years abroad all her travels combined, a feat even today. Piranesi’s vedute (views,) possibly acquired while abroad, accurately depict in physical appearance, but also in essence a particular time and place making it the perfect tool for Randolph to use in the classroom.
