Egyptian Scarab

This Egyptian scarab is made of a buff colored steatite. This scarab is from the New Kingdom, Dynasty 18 between 1570-1293 BCE. It was used as jewelry. The scarab is Egypt’s dung beetle. Underneath there’s a design of a kneeling god. It’s facing right, holding a notched papyrus stalk. This design symbolizes a wish for longevity meaning “a million years.” The notched stalk meant years and the god Heh was a sign for million. This is also a gift from Caroline Ransom and from the collection of Professor Louise Fitz Randolph.
