Scarab, 1504-1450 BCE, MHCAM, gift of Mrs. Grant Williams (Caroline Ransom, Class of 1896) from the collection of Professor Louise Fitz Randolph

Egyptian Scarab

Accession Number: MH1943.20.A.J

This object dates from 1504-1450 BCE (New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, Reign of Tuthmosis III).

It is meant to be worn as jewelry. It is a scarab which is also as the very common dung beetle in Egypt. Underneath the scarab it’s inscribed with a striding horse, which symbolizes the king. Above the horse’s back there’s an inscription meaning “good” or “beautiful.” This was donated by Caroline Ransom Williams.
