Egyptian Scarab

This Egyptian Scarab is from the Second Intermediate Period between 1782-1570 BCE. Scarabs are the native dung beetles in Egypt. This object is a gift from Caroline Ransom Williams. Its purpose is for adornment and was very commonly worn by people of every class during this time period.It’s made of pale buff steatite. Its design underneath is of a crocodile and a crouching antelope. The antelope symbolizes birth the goddess of fertility and the crocodile symbolizes Amut “Devourer of the Dead” meaning death.
