For our second design iteration of LibGuides subject guides, we performed user experience activities to gather input from students. We did a small amount of moderated usability testing, asking students to perform certain tasks using the guides and self-narrate as they did so.
We also did a multiple sessions of participatory design where we defined what subject guides are, what they are used for, and showed a current guide. Then we asked students to draw a guide that would be most useful to them. Library staff listened to them describe what they drew, then identified, categorized, and ranked student “wish lists”.
MHC LibGuides Redesign Project is a pdf of a presentation about the project, presented virtually for SpringyCamp in 2012.
