Cameroon Chronicles

Mon arrivée à Yaoundé était très spéciale. Quand je suis arrivée à l’aéroport Nsimalen, il y avait beaucoup de monde et beaucoup d’acclamations et sourires. C’était un moment de célébration, mais pas exactement pour mon arrivée. Quand j’ai traversé la douane, l’équipe du foot du Cameroun a gagné le match demi-finale de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations. Il y a plusieurs années depuis l’équipe du Cameroun n’avait gagné une finale de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations, donc les Camerounais étaient très heureux. À l’aéroport, Emma et moi étions accueillies par Asa et Ariane. Pendant la plupart de notre trajet d’une heure à l’hôtel, les rues étaient remplies des gens qui ont brandi des drapeaux camerounais et qui ont fait du bruit avec des couvercles des marmites en métal. C’était vraiment une grande célébration et un moment de fierté pour Cameroun. L’excitation des Camerounais pour leur équipe du foot est comme l’enthousiasme des Américains pour leurs équipes du football américaine. Par coïncidence, tout s’est passé la même weekend du Superbowl du football Américain.

Le jour après mon arrivée au Cameroun, j’ai regardé le match final de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations avec Ariane et sa famille. Et puis, la célébration a continué ! Le Cameroun a gagné le match final de la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations. Après le match, nous sommes allées à l’aéroport pour venir chercher Amber, la dernière fille du programme. Nous sommes allées à l’aéroport bien avant l’arrivée de Amber, donc nous avons eu environs trois heures de temps libre. Pendant les trois heures, nous avons rencontré Simon, notre nouvel ami. Simon est une garde militaire qui protège des touristes à l’aéroport Nsimalen. Simon vient de Douala, a étudié en France, et est un champion national de karaté.

My arrival in Yaoundé was very special. When I arrived at the airport, there were lots of people, cheering, and smiles. It was a moment of celebration…but not exactly to celebrate my arrival. The moment when I went through customs, the Cameroonian soccer team won the semi-final of the African Cup of Nations. It has been many years since the Cameroonian soccer team has qualified for the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, so the people of Cameroon were very excited. At the airport, Emma and I were welcomed by Asa, another girl in our program, and Ariane, the director of our program. During the majority of our trip to the hotel, the roads were filled with people waving the Cameroonian flag and making noise with metal trash can lids to celebrate the soccer team’s success. It was a big moment of pride and joy for Cameroon. The excitement of Cameroonians for their soccer team was like the enthusiasm Americans have for their favorite football teams. Coincidentally, this all happened the same weekend as the American Football SuperBowl.

The day after my arrival in Cameroon, I watched the final match of the African Cup of Nations with the director of my program and her family. And then…the celebration continued! Cameroon won the final match of the African Cup of Nations against Egypt. Just after the game, we went to the airport to pick up Amber, the last girl in our program to arrive. We went to the airport well in advance of Amber’s scheduled arrival, so we had about three hours of free time. During that time, we met Simon, our new friend and personal bodyguard (not really, but basically yes).
