You have a certain level of expertise with armor. You automatically begin with Proficiency in No Armor. To gain a new armor proficiency, you must meet the prerequisites for the new proficiency and spend the required number of trait points, as listed below.
When you are wearing an armor type that you are proficient with, you add your Proficiency Score to your AC.
