A familiar is an animal chosen by you to aid you in your study of magic. It retains the appearance of a normal member of its species but is now magical for the purpose of effects that depend on its tags. Only a normal, unmodified animal may become a familiar.

A familiar grants special abilities to its master and increases in power, as given in Animal Companions, Familiars, and Mounts in the Additional section. Your Proficiency Score increases, as concerns your familiar, is considered 0 when you first take this and increases with your Proficiency Score from there. Any special abilities apply only when you and familiar are within 1 mile of each other.

If a familiar is lost or dies, it can be replaced 1 week later through a specialized ritual that costs 3 gp per Proficiency Score of the familiar. The ritual takes 8 hours to complete.
