Magic Items are commonly grouped into one of the following categories: Runes, Scrolls, Staffs, or Wands. These are items that add magical properties to existing equipment, in the case of runes, or can create magical effects, like the other categories. Items that do not below to any of the above options but are magical are considered a Wondrous Item. While wondrous items function by many of the same rules as magic items, they are more variable in their shape, size, and function. The final category for magic items is not an item. Casting services are the hiring of a mage to cast a spell or spells.
While casting services, runes, and wondrous items are all clearly defined, the difference between scrolls, staffs, and wands is more detailed. Each type of item can cast spells and the distinction lies; besides the materials in which a scroll is paper, a wand is a short stick, and a staff a long stick, in the number of uses per 24 hours and the number of spells it can cast.
Type | Number of Spells | Number of Uses |
Scroll | One | One, destroyed after use |
Staff | More than one, depends on the staff | More than one, depends on the staff |
Wand | One | More than one, depends on wand |
All magical items that cast spells use the Spell Attack and Spell DC of the wielder unless otherwise specified. You do not need to know or have access to the Spellcasting trait to have a Spell Attack, Spell DC, or use a magic item. Cast spells from magic items does not use spell slots.
